  1) OUTLINE

Welded joint contains residual internal stress close to the yield point of general steel partly. Therefore preheat treatment is needed to remove the residual stress.
We name it as stress relief annealing. Stress relief annealing is the main method of preheat treatment. It is not only effective to remove the residual stress but effective to stabilize the nature of material and dimension. Therefore in the case of ASME, BOILER AND PRESSURE VESSEL CODE, instead of STRESS RELIEF ANNEALING used before, preheat treatment itself is being used. The reason residual can be relieved throughpreheat treatment is like this. In the welded material containing residual stress, tension stress part and compressive
stress part are well balanced by pulling each other. Then if this is heated at the
proper high temperature, plastic deformation occurs by creep and stress release.
Because of this, residual stress can be relieved through preheat treatment.
Beside this, the structure become changed due to the recovery of internal
defect and recrystallization.

The expected effect through stress relief annealing is below.
¥ë The relief of welded residual stress.
¥ë The increase of resistance toward stress corrosion.
¥ë The prevention of natural fracture by welded hydrogen exposure.
¥ë The increase of tenderness in welded part.
¥ë The prevention of dimension's mismatch.
¥ë The prevention of tempering tenderness in heat effected area.
¥ë The change of tenderness and hardness.

We decide the factor of stress relief annealing considering below.
¥ë Thing that receives big impact weight.
¥ë Thing that receives rapid temperature change.
¥ë Thing that is being used with the temperature that tends to cause brittle fracture.
¥ë Thing that has deep internal thickness and that tends to cause brittle fracture.
¥ë Thing that was welded together with fittings mainly.
¥ë Thing that needs the improvement of the nature of material in the view of       metallurgy.
¥ë Thing that has high degree of cold working.
¥ë Thing that has extra importance.
¥ë Thing that receives the rapid change of pressure.
